Bring on Spring: A Guide to Aspen’s Hottest Events

Friday, March 1st, 2019 at 12:34pm Engel & Völkers Aspen • Snowmass • Roaring Fork

The 2018-19 ski season has been epic—with spring on the way, it’s only getting hotter. Most locals will tell you this has been one of the best ski seasons we’ve seen in years, with more powder days than we can count. After all that snow, we’re all ready for spring: fair-weather skiing, long patio lunches, après ski outside, live music and can’t-miss events to celebrate the close of a memorable season. Spring in Aspen means having fun in the sun in a way that would put any beach vacation to shame. Let’s close out this ski season right with these can’t-miss events this spring:

Get some, and then get some more: Extended Lift Hours

Didn’t make it onto the slopes until noon? No worries, you can still get your fill of skiing in as Aspen Skiing Company recently announced several lifts will stay open later to celebrate the arrival of spring. On Aspen Mountain, Silver Queen Gondola, Ajax Express and the FIS Chair will stay open until 4 p.m. In Snowmass, the Elk Camp Gondola and Sheer Bliss lifts run until 4 p.m. The Village Express operates until 4 p.m. to the top and 4:15 p.m. to the mid station. At Highlands, Exhibition is the late lift and at Buttermilk, the Summit Express turns until 4 p.m.

Ski all day, party all night: Sunset Skiing + Sundeck Party

As if the current extended lift hours aren’t enough, The Silver Queen Gondola and Ajax Express Lift will stay open for skiing and snowboarding until 6 p.m. on Friday, March 15 followed by an après -ski party at the Sundeck hosted by Après Ski Cocktail Classic. Food and drink specials, DJ on the deck, with live music inside from the David Higgins Band. Food and drinks served until 8:30 p.m., last gondola ride down is 9 p.m. Foot passes available for only $10 after 4 p.m. For details, please call 970.429.6971. Purchase your foot pass in advance or at the Aspen Mountain Ticket Office.

Where the champagne flows like wine: Cliquot in the Snow at Ajax Tavern

Sipping champagne on the best sun-soaked patio at the base of Aspen Mountain? It doesn’t get much better than that. Touted as the best place to “ski and be seen” join DJ Dylan with drink specials from Veuve Clicquot every Saturday and Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at Ajax Tavern all spring long for the best bubbly and beats in town.

And of course, a music festival: Announcing The Après Spring Music and Mountain Festival

Aspen loves its outdoor concerts, so why not host a music festival in the spring? The Après is a brand-new three-day music and mountain festival April 5-7, 2019 that will be held on the snow at the base of Buttermilk at the same venue as X Games Aspen. During Buttermilk's closing weekend, the festival will kick off with Umphrey’s McGee on Friday, April 5 followed by back-to-back nights of jamming with The String Cheese Incident. Additional bands and programming will be announced in the coming weeks, including late-night shows at The Belly Up in downtown Aspen. Aside from musical performances, all four Aspen Snowmass mountains will be open for skiing, riding and celebrating spring. Aspen Snowmass will offer three-day music festival passes along with all-inclusive packages for lift tickets, lodging and/or airfare through Stay Aspen Snowmass.

Last Call: Closing Day Parties

If you’ve never stuck around for the last day of ski season, Aspen’s closing day parties are legendary. Like everything in Aspen, people go big with elaborate costumes, loud music, and a party that starts on the slopes, continues down to the base of the mountain, and never stops. The biggest, wildest, and most renowned is the Closing Day Party at Aspen Highlands, Sunday, April 8, 2019 where thousands turn out for that last hike up Highlands Bowl for a big barbeque, followed by the biggest dance party of the year as dueling DJ’s spin tunes at the base as skiers in retro ski gear, animal costumes, wild wigs and crazy hats. The local’s favorite, the crowd pays homage to the Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol as they officially close the season with their final sweep. On Aspen Mountain, it’s an ‘80s Prom Party on Sunday, April 21, 2019 where a Prom King and Queen will be crowned as DJ Dylan spins ‘80s beats at the Sundeck until 3:30 p.m. As always, the party goes on at Ajax Tavern’s Closing Day Party.
